Unquestionably one of the greatest challenges for today's dealership is hiring qualified people, particularly qualified entry-level people. Virginia's Automotive Technology Education Partnership was created to assist dealerships in developing the entry-level automotive technicians they need.
The key to the success of this partnership is the involvement of every dealership in their local secondary school programs. The AYES partnership needs dealers who are committed to helping themselves by helping Virginia's educators and Virginia's students.
Dealers and managers are needed to serve on "Dealer Advisory Boards" that provide direction to local schools on the development of their programs. These Advisory Boards provide an opportunity for dealerships to insure schools are educating and training students on the skills needed in today's dealerships.
Dealerships are also needed to provide critical summer internship opportunities for students between their Junior and Senior year. Experienced Service Technicians are needed to serve as Mentors during these internships. This gives dealerships a chance to help train students in the professionalism, reliability, and work ethics necessary to the success of the dealership and the employee.
It also provides an excellent source of new "homegrown" employees for the dealership's service department.
